1. Basic Meaning of "May" and "Might"

"May" aur "Might" dono modal verbs hain jo possibility yaani ki kisi cheez ke hone ke chances ko dikhate hain. Dono ka meaning similar hai, par inka use thoda alag hota hai.

"May": Yeh tab use hota hai jab chances zyada ho ki kuch hoga.

"Might": Yeh tab use hota hai jab chances kam ho ki kuch hoga.

Example:
  • I may go to the party.
  • Main party mein ja sakta hoon (shayad party mein jaane ke chances zyada hain).
  • I might go to the party.
  • Main party mein ja sakta hoon (shayad party mein jaane ke chances kam hain).

2. Permission and Formality (Ijaazat aur Formality)

"May" aksar formal permission lene ya dene ke liye use hota hai, jabki "might" rarely permission (Bahut kam li jaane wali permissions) ke liye use hota hai.

Example:
  • May I come in? 
  • Kya main andar aa sakta hoon? ("May" ka use permission lene ke liye kiya gaya hai)
  • Might I come in? 
  • Kya main andar aa sakta hoon? ("Might" bahut formal hai aur rarely kabhi kabhar use hota hai)

3. Possibility in Present or Future (Aaj ya future ki Possibility)

Present ya future ki possibility ke liye "may" aur "might" dono use ho sakte hain, lekin "may" thoda zyada certain hai.

Example:
  • She may come tomorrow. (Possibility zyada hai)
  • Wo kal a sakti hai. ("May" ka use kiya hai kyunki chances thode zyada hain)
  • She might come tomorrow. (Possibility kam hai)
  • Wo kal a sakti hai. ("Might" ka use kiya hai kyunki chances kam hain)

4. Past Possibility (Past ki Possibility)

Agar kisi aisi cheez ke baare mein baat kar rahe hain jo past mein shayad ho sakti thi par hui nahi, to "might have" use hota hai. "May have" bhi correct hai, par "might have" zyada common hai.

Example:
  • She might have gone to the market.
  • Shayad wo market gayi ho sakti thi.
  • They may have forgotten the meeting.
  • Shayad unhone meeting bhul gayi hogi.

5. Hypothetical Situations (Imagine ki hui situations)

Hypothetical yaani "kya hota agar" type situations ke liye "may" generally use nahi hota, par "might" zyada use hota hai.

Example:
  • If I had studied harder, I might have passed.
  • Agar maine aur mehnat se padha hota, to shayad main pass ho sakta tha.
  • If we had left earlier, we might have caught the train.
  • Agar hum pehle nikle hote, to shayad hum train pakad sakte the.

6. Politeness and Tentativeness 

"Might" zyada polite ya tentative hota hai suggestions dete waqt, jabki "may" thoda less polite ya direct lagta hai.

Example:
  • You may want to see a doctor. (Less tentative, direct suggestion)
  • Aapko doctor ko dikhana chahiye. ("May" yahan suggestion thoda direct hai)
  • You might want to see a doctor. (Zyada polite, tentative suggestion)
  • Shayad aapko doctor ko dikhana chahiye. ("Might" yahan suggestion zyada polite hai)
